January 20th to January 24th

We were very excited to have the opportunity to learn  and practice a new skill with our first days of Alien In-Line Skating. The students learned and practiced a variety of skills including: stopping, falling safely numerous tricks such as the daffy and the race car. It was wonderful to see the student's progress over our first days.  We had the opportunity to support our grade one buddies during their skating times. The were supportive, helping their buddies with their skates and safety gear. It was wonderful to see the grade fours showing such care and kindness for others. January 13th to January 17th

Over the past week, the students have truly pushed themselves with their math thinking and learning. The students have done a fantastic job working through the process of addition including adding decimals and monetary values. It was exciting to see themselves apply this understanding to a variety of new situations. Once the students gained confidence with adding with regrouping, they worked on a problem  where they were finding the mass of two cats. This open ended task pushed the students as they had to determine what the problem was asking and identify ways in which they could solve the problem. In working with addition of larger numbers, the students have recognized the importance of learning their basic facts. In order to give the students an opportunity to practice their facts and to see and hear the thinking of others, we then worked together on a collaborative thinking task. January 6th to January 10th

It was a busy first week back to school. The students were excited to complete their perfectly imperfect critter writing project. Inspired by the book, The Baranabus Project, where a creature who was built to be a p erfect pet was called a failed project. Half mouse, half elephant, Barnabus was kept out of sight until he learned to love who he was. First, the students experimented with creating their own perfectly imperfect pets. Next, they selected a favourite and created a visual representation and a three dimensional plasticine model of their critter. We then used our drawings and plasticine creations to help us to add descriptive vocabulary, sensory details and figurative language to best describe the appearance of our pets. We worked to selected specific interesting words. Rather than round, big sharp and  students wrote words such as bulbous, enormous and as sharp as a razor.
