January 27th to January 30th

Over the past two weeks, the students have been very engaged in The Case of the Greedy Gnome! This exciting math mystery had the students practicing their addition and subtraction skills and applying their knowledge of graphing to solve the mystery of which gnome stole food from the supply room. First, the students identified key information in the graphs and questions, highlighting necessary information. Then, they interpreted different types of graphs with differing scales, including bar graphs, line plots, pictographs and pie charts. After doing this, they answered the questions and eliminated suspects to identify the guilty gnome. Be sure to have your child share who the greedy gnome was!

Learning Outcomes:

I can form questions, collect data, represent data, and interpret data.
I can interpret data represented in pictographs, bar graphs, dot plots, and more.
I can understand the use of scale to share data in different graphs.

Questions to Ask Your Child:

Who was the greedy gnome?
How did you eliminate suspects?
What types of graphs did you work with?
What graphs did you find the easiest to read? The most challenging?

Over the last two weeks, the students have been highly engaged in our gymnastics unit in physical education. They have been exploring a variety of balances and methods of travel, working to challenge themselves to utilize differing levels such as a low balance such as the splits or a high balance on the balls of their feet. They were extremely excited when they entered the gym on Monday and found the equipment set up. They have had the opportunity to try ropes, ladders, beams and bars. It has been wonderful to see how different each student approaches each piece of equipment. Learning Outcomes: I can understand that elements of movement are integrated through various combinations to create movement. I can integrate elements of movement in various physical activities. I can engage in physical activities that are enjoyable or rewarding. Questions to ask your child: What apparatus have you enjoyed the most? (beam, bar, ladder...) Is there an apparatus you have found challenging? What is a...

June 16th to June 20th

It is heard to believe that this was our final week week of the school year. The time has definitely flown past. Despite how close we are to the end of the year, the students have been working incredibly hard his week. We finished up our work in angles in math and the students completed their social studies research on The North West Mounted Police and early settlement in Alberta. Then, they worked to represent their learning in a Google Slideshow. This was a perfect connection to our Western Heritage Day where we enjoyed a pancake breakfast and afternoon of Western themes games with our buddies. We were also incredibly to learn about hoop dancing through a fantastic performance by Jay Genaille.

April 14th to April 17th

In Science, we moved into our next unit of study Earth Systems. We kicked off our unit from an in class learning opportunity. Our guest presenter introduced us to a huge amount of new information as we learned about the lithosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere. We learned all about the Earth’s systems and investigated how their interconnections sustain life on our planet! We discovered how water, sun and air support plants and animals on Earth and the responsibility we share in caring for our resources. We then learned how changes in one system affect or impact the other systems on Earth. The students were excited to create their own three dimensional models showing all four spheres. They cannot wait to bring them home to share with you. A huge thank you to Parent Council for making this presentation possible and to the volunteers who were so generous with their time and energy. We then worked to solidify our learning but taking part in one of the student's favourite activit...
