June 16th to June 20th

It is heard to believe that this was our final week week of the school year. The time has definitely flown past. Despite how close we are to the end of the year, the students have been working incredibly hard his week. We finished up our work in angles in math and the students completed their social studies research on The North West Mounted Police and early settlement in Alberta. Then, they worked to represent their learning in a Google Slideshow. This was a perfect connection to our Western Heritage Day where we enjoyed a pancake breakfast and afternoon of Western themes games with our buddies. We were also incredibly to learn about hoop dancing through a fantastic performance by Jay Genaille.

June 9th to June 13th

This week, we were so excited to have the opportunity to learn a little about Canada's National Summer Sport with our lacrosse residency with Coach Dan from Elev8 Lacrosse . We then learned  and practiced some of the basics including how to hold the stick, pick up and cradle the ball as well as tossing and catching the ball. We then moved onto passing, catching, aiming the ball and scoring. The students had a fantastic time playing games on our final day, showcasing their skills and their teamwork. A huge thank you to Andrew Sibbald Parent Council for providing this opportunity. Learning Outcomes: I can perform elements of movement when receiving, sending, and retaining an object using various parts of the body and equipment. I can recognize the presence and influence of diverse Aboriginal peoples as inherent to Alberta’s culture and identity.

June 2nd to June 6th

Over the past few weeks the students have been learning all about the early days of our province. They looked at texts, learning about the Fur Trade, Voyageurs and the development of Forts along the rivers and how this brought change to the West. The students read and discussed the development of the North West Mounted Police and the extension of the railway. We learned how the government encouraged European immigration to Western Canada. We examined a variety of advertising posters, discussing the audience they were targeting, the accuracy of the posters and why people would want to leave their country and call Canada home. Our trip to Heritage Park was a fantastic culmination of our learning. The students had opportunities to get a glimpse of what life used to be like in our province. They were able to visit tipis, a blacksmith shop and a Fort where they could examine examine animal pelts. May 26th to May 30th

The start of our week was full with our final preparations for our Celebration of Learning. The students put the final touches on their food trucks and worked to fold and tape their two dimensional net into their three dimensional truck. The students were so excited to see their trucks come to life. For many, this final step was challenging as they worked to carefully cut and fold their trucks. We then did some work with three dimensional shapes including cubes, cylinders and cones as the students added toppers to their trucks. Students then had the opportunity to create a digital version of their food truck using Canva. They learned that by thinking carefully through their logo elements and describing them with a good amount of detail, they were able to create a digital logo that very closely resembled their hand drawn work. May 20th to May 23rd

This week in math, we focused on division, beginning with how division and multiplication are connected. Students solved division questions, created images to represent the division questions and found the related multiplication equation. We focused on the idea that division is breaking up or sharing a number into equal parts, examining when numbers can be shared equally and what happens when numbers cannot be shared equally. The students continued to be engaged in the final stages of our food truck project. They added their final designs to their trucks and began building their three dimensional trucks. Many students selected to add other 3D shapes onto their trucks, providing further learning about geometry and how 2D nets can be made into 3D shapes. May 12th to May 15th

This week, the students continued with their work on their food trucks. The students have been so excited and engaged with this project, many sharing that it is their favourite part of the day. The students worked to apply their understanding of area by designing the interior floor plan of their truck. First, we looked at what items would be necessary to drive, prepare their menu items, store supplies and run their business. Some students needed deep fryers, others grills and some needed ice cream machines. Next, we the students planned out the interiors and designed their floor plans. Students were challenged to design their plans to scale with 1 square cm on the grid paper equivalent to 1 dm in real life. This challenge brought about wonderful critical thinking as the students measured and planned, imagining the amount of space needed to travel within their workspace or how much space was needed in the front of their truck so they would have enough space to sit and reach the gas pedd...

May 5th to May 9th

Over the last two weeks, the students have been highly engaged in our gymnastics unit in physical education. They have been exploring a variety of balances and methods of travel, working to challenge themselves to utilize differing levels such as a low balance such as the splits or a high balance on the balls of their feet. They were extremely excited when they entered the gym on Monday and found the equipment set up. They have had the opportunity to try ropes, ladders, beams and bars. It has been wonderful to see how different each student approaches each piece of equipment. Learning Outcomes: I can understand that elements of movement are integrated through various combinations to create movement. I can integrate elements of movement in various physical activities.
